Los Angeles punk outfit X formed in 1977 and are widely considered one of the most accessible and tuneful punk bands of the era. Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake nudged punk up a notch with poetic lyrics and a hard-driving sound that occasionally flirted with country and blues. Their landmark 1980 record Los Angeles resonated so loudly with the artisans of that city, the band received an Official Certificate of Recognition from the City of Los Angeles in acknowledgment of their important contributions to the city’s music and culture. The band regrouped in the early 1990s to record and continues to perform live; their latest releases include the DVDs X: The Unheard Music and X: Live In Los Angeles.
