Grammy-winning act The Del McCoury Band is an icon of bluegrass. Inspired at a young age by the music of Flatt and Scruggs, McCoury played in bands in the Baltimore area until, in 1963, he was invited to join Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1963. After a year in the band, McCoury and his new wife moved to California and then back to Pennsylvania, where Del juggled a schedule of day jobs and weekend gigs. In 1967, McCoury started his own band, the Dixie Pals, later renamed the Del McCoury Band. In the 1980s, the group began to solidify its line-up, adding Del’s sons Ronnie on mandolin, Robbie on banjo, plus Alan Bartram on bass, and Jason Carter on fiddle. In the 1990s, McCoury helped promote the growing popularity of bluegrass, first with “The Mountain,” a collaboration with Steve Earle, followed by increasingly successful records on Rounder, Ricky Skaggs' Ceili Records and lately their own label. Today, the Del McCoury Band enjoys the praise of traditional bluegrass lovers and tie-dyed “Del-Heads” alike. Del McCoury has proven not to be a relic of bluegrass music's past but an architect of its future.
