News: Tom Waits Reveals "Glitter and Doom" Tour

The wait for Tom Waits dates is over (zing!) As previously reported, the hard-to-hate Waits promised a spate of the things in the U.S. and Europe just as the season to mate comes to an end. Hey, that's great!

And now Tom has delivered, revealing a 13-date North American trek, with European shows in the works. It's all supporting, er, Scarlett Johansson's soon-to-arrive record of Tom Waits covers? I guess? The big announcement was made via a humorous YouTube "press conference" posted this morning. Hey, if this whole music thing doesn't work out, Tom can ...

Wired: 40+ companies that inflate MySpace play counts for a price...

Is it wrong to inflate MySpace song plays? If every other band and label is doing it, you almost have to—just like baseball players and steroids. It’s unlikely that MySpace will be able to defeat every type of play count-increasing technology, just like it’s unlikely that Major League Baseball will ever be able to do away completely with all performance-enhancing drugs. Read and comment. From blog.wired.com.

No more Vegoose...

The autumn event extended the traditional summer concert season, with the added novelty of a Halloween-in-Vegas atmosphere — past activities and attractions included costumed concertgoers, an Impersonators Cafe, a wedding chapel and the festival’s signature, the Great Evil Pumpkin. But the fundamental goal of Vegoose was to boost tourism and business during a traditionally flat period for gaming properties in Las Vegas. Libonati and Christenson were optimistic about the music festival they hoped would become an annual signature event for the city. It seemed to work at first. According to a post-event analysis compiled by R&R Partners, a ...

More bands sign with brands in lieu of record label deals...

Times UK: From boutique favourites such as Agent Provocateur and Joe Bloggs to icons of the global hyper-mall such as Diesel, Yahoo!, Audi and Coca-Cola, brands have awoken to music’s potential as a powerful communication tool, and a content gold rush is on. Under the “lifestyle” umbrella, household names are seeking out, signing and promoting music. And far from heralding a sellout, taking the corporate shilling may be the smartest career move a struggling artist can make. With unsigned MySpace hopefuls such as the singer-songwriter Tom Glynn partnering Caffè Nero for instore music and branded CDs, and big-name ...

Lars Ulrich suggests Metallica could follow Radiohead

“We want to be as free (as) players as possible,” Ulrich told Rolling Stone during the band’s Northern California appearance for Record Store Day. “We’ve been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we’ll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet.” No, he’s not endorsing peer-to-peer sites, but there’s no mistaking what Ulrich meant. The group is considering whether to follow the lead of Radiohead and Reznor, leader of the band Nine Inch Nails. Those acts sent shock waves ...
