It’s impossible to picture the bluegrass scene today without including Alison Krauss, the mainstay that has been gaining popularity on the scene since her first recording at 14. Now, she’s making appearances on tour with Union Station, proving to audiences nationwide why bluegrass is as vibrant as ever.
“I think that the musicianship in bluegrass music is stellar,” she told in an interview with PBS. “Improvisation is celebrated like crazy in bluegrass music. But for me, I think the real draw is the message, which is a very simplistic message… It’s when the days were simpler, and you always loved the girl next door. Home was the best place to be, and you never wanted to leave it. That’s really the message of the music that I’m so drawn to.”
The message of the music is only one aspect that captivates fans of Alison and Union Station. After recording together for so long, the group still has not grown stagnant.
“You know, I think because we’ve been together for as many years as we have, we all travel and do other things,” Krauss explained. “Every place you go, you bring that experience back here. Whether it’s in your work life, your music life, or your personal life, it always shows up in your recordings and I love to see this band grow together and change. So for me, every record we make is like the first one and like the last one,” she said. “It really represents a piece of time for all of us.”
Perhaps what maintains fans’ interest is the candid, open quality that characterizes the group’s lyrics.
“Everything is lyric. It has to be true for me to say it,” Krauss said. “When it is true for me, it never gets old.”
